Nestled in a shopping district, Centennial Lakes Park in Edina, MN may be a greater display of architecture and landscaping than natural preservation, and yet nature persists even in this man-made pond. Paved walkways along the lake are peppered with tables & swings and lined with many native plants. Fish swim in these dark and shallow waters and the north end of the lake has been landscaped as a native prairie garden. What I initially took for a crow proved to be a discreet green heron hunting along the cattails.
Because of the open nature of these lakeside paths, caution should be exercised with young children near the water’s edge.
