Picnic Point – Madison, WI

Picnic Point in the Lakeshore Nature Preserve of Madison, Wisconsin is a popular destination along Lake Mendota.  A series of reservable picnic sites along the peninsula featuring seats and fire pits usually host at least a few groups on an afternoon, and a large path can take you down to the overlook where you will have several clear views of the lake and lakeshores, including the UW campus.  Side trails along the peninsula will lead you through the trees closer to the lakeshore, affording access to scrubby beach opposite a sheltered marsh on the north side, and tree-sheltered lotuses on the south side.  More paths still will lead you away through the broader Lakeshore Preserve, taking you southeast along University Bay towards the lakeside college campus or northwest towards Second Point.  Many of the main paths are wide and easily passed with a stroller, but some can be steep or narrow and may challenge even a sturdy jogging stroller (and make if difficult for other hikers to pass on the trail).
